Michael Pitt is a molecular biologist fixated on the human eye, certain that evolution can account for even its most intricate design. As his research intensifies, Brit Marling’s lab partner helps him follow a line of evidence that begins in the lab and opens onto questions science can’t neatly contain. What starts as a study of vision grows into a confrontation between empirical proof and spiritual belief, with ideas of identity and reincarnation pushing against everything he thinks he knows. Mike Cahill keeps the focus close to the investigation, where romance, faith, and biology begin to overlap.
