Musashi Miyamoto has turned away from life as a wandering samurai, trying to live quietly as a farmer while powerful lords seek his service and old rivals refuse to let him disappear. Toshirô Mifune is Musashi, weathered and restless even in retreat, with Otsu and Akemi both drawn to the man he might become. Koji Tsuruta’s Sasaki Kojiro, now aligned with the shogun, waits for the duel the two swordsmen have promised to fight. As bandits close in on the village and the date at Ganryu Island approaches, the film threads together romance, duty, and one last contest between legendary opponents.
