Robin Groves is Lauren Cochran, an agoraphobic New York writer of gothic fiction who leaves the city for a rented Victorian mansion in the countryside, hoping a change of scene will break her writer's block. Instead, the house fills with apparitions and flashes of a buried crime: it was once a brothel, and a 1940s massacre still hangs over the property. As Lauren tries to piece together what happened there, the mansion's history starts pressing into the present. John Carradine and Gloria Grahame are part of the film's small-town circle surrounding Lauren and the house she should never have entered.
