After losing his father and his farm to a ruthless landlord, Tom Cruise is Joseph Donelly, an Irish tenant farmer bent on settling the score. Instead, he ends up on a ship to America with Nicole Kidman’s headstrong daughter of the house, who sees the Oklahoma land rush as her way out. They arrive in Boston with no money and little footing, forced into cheap rooms, hard labor, and Joseph’s skill in bare-knuckle boxing just to get by. As they push west toward the promise of open land, their partnership keeps shifting between class hostility, dependence, and romance.
