Returning to Earth after a failed search for extraterrestrial life, the crew of the USS Palomino stumbles on the long-lost Cygnus hanging impossibly at the edge of a black hole. Maximilian Schell is Dr. Hans Reinhardt, the brilliant, isolated commander who still rules the silent ship alongside a towering robot enforcer, while Robert Forster’s Captain Dan Holland leads the visitors deeper inside. The Cygnus’s cavernous corridors, suspended machinery, and strangely obedient crew turn awe into suspicion as the Palomino team uncovers what Reinhardt has been building so close to the void.
