After finding a handbag on the New York subway, Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) returns it to Greta, a widowed French piano teacher whose loneliness quickly pulls the two into an intense friendship. Still finding her footing in the city, Frances is drawn to the older woman’s attention and maternal warmth, while her roommate Erica — Maika Monroe — is less convinced. As visits to Greta’s apartment become more frequent, small details begin to feel off, and Frances realizes the lost purse may not have been an accident. Isabelle Huppert’s Greta shifts from gracious to unsettling as the relationship turns possessive.
