Facing his father’s apparent deathbed, a young man recruits a hat-check girl to impersonate his fiancée for one final family visit. Robert Cummings is the son who assumes the deception will be brief; Deanna Durbin’s stranger steps into the role and finds herself warmly absorbed into the household. Then the father (Charles Laughton) begins to recover, and the invented engagement becomes harder to explain—especially once he grows attached to the woman his son was never supposed to bring home. Between the rushed train-station setup and the mounting dinner-table awkwardness, the film turns a mercy lie into romantic confusion and polished domestic farce.
