Across one long night in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki, five taxi rides turn into brief, revealing encounters between cabbies and the strangers in their back seats. In the Los Angeles story, Winona Ryder is Corky, a young driver whose passenger is a Hollywood casting agent; elsewhere, Roberto Benigni’s Roman cabbie turns a routine fare into a torrent of talk. Jim Jarmusch links the stories by time zone and city mood, moving from deadpan conversation to loneliness and chance connection as headlights, street corners, and passing faces drift through the windows, with Tom Waits’ music hanging over the night.
