The Night of the Hunter

CrimeDramaThriller93 min

In Depression-era West Virginia, two children are stalked by a traveling preacher who wants the stolen cash their late father hid before going to prison. Robert Mitchum is Harry Powell, a Bible-quoting drifter whose charm and sermonizing hide a murderer, and Shelley Winters's Willa is the vulnerable widow he courts to get closer to the secret. Shot in black and white, the film mixes a crime plot with Southern Gothic menace and expressionist imagery, turning bedrooms, riverbanks, and even a hymn into the landscape of a dark fairy tale.
