Melvin Udall is a successful Manhattan novelist whose obsessive routines and cutting manners keep nearly everyone at a distance. Jack Nicholson is Melvin, thrown off balance when his neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear), a gay artist, is assaulted in a robbery and Melvin is left caring for Simon’s dog. At the same time, he keeps circling the same restaurant and the same waitress: Helen Hunt’s Carol, a single mother whose son’s health problems leave little room for anyone else’s chaos. What follows pulls these three strangers into each other’s lives, from awkward daily encounters to an unexpected road trip out of the city.
