A homicide detective starts digging into a death that looks routine and finds a crime syndicate with its hands in the police, the courts, and city hall. As he keeps pushing, the case stops being just another file and turns into a direct fight with the men who run the town from behind respectable fronts. Pressure closes in from every side: witnesses are frightened off, allies prove unreliable, and every step forward brings harsher retaliation. Glenn Ford is at the center as the detective refuses to back down, while Gloria Grahame appears within the mob’s orbit, where private loyalties and public corruption keep colliding.
