Fresh out of prison, master burglar Doc Riedenschneider puts together a jewel heist in a Midwestern city, lining up a safecracker, a getaway man, and backing from a crooked lawyer whose money comes with its own risks. Sam Jaffe is Doc, all patience and calculation, while Louis Calhern’s Alonzo Emmerich brings polish and rot to the operation’s respectable front. Sterling Hayden is part of the crew assembled for the job, and Marilyn Monroe appears in an early supporting role. Directed by John Huston, the film follows the mechanics of the robbery and the pressures that gather around it before anyone makes a clean escape.
