After the skeleton of a murdered sheriff turns up in a South Texas border town, Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) reopens a case that has been buried for decades. What starts as a murder investigation keeps widening, pulling in old family history, local power, and the racial divisions that shape the town’s Mexican American, Black, and white communities. Elizabeth Peña is part of the network of long-held ties and unfinished business that Sam can’t avoid as past and present begin to overlap. The film threads mystery through border-town politics, memory, and the legacy left by the lawmen who came before him.
