A banker hires a seedy detective to find his daughter and keep her out of the hands of kidnappers, turning a family emergency into a search through France’s criminal margins. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Philippe Noiret lead the film as the case passes through brothels, ransom demands, and a string of dubious leads. The setup begins as a rescue mission, but the pursuit keeps slipping sideways, with dark comedy and mystery rubbing against each other as the father’s money and the detective’s methods complicate what should be a straightforward recovery.
