The Old Maid
Drama95 min
Bette Davis is Charlotte, an unmarried woman in Civil War-era America whose bond with her cousin is strained by the return of a former lover and the arrival of a child who complicates both their lives. Opposite her, Miriam Hopkins brings brightness and social polish to the cousin at the center of that rivalry, as affection, resentment, and family obligation begin to overlap. Moving from youthful romance into years of quiet sacrifice and bitterness, the story follows two women bound to each other by scandal, status, and a history neither can fully escape.
