After his activist girlfriend leaves him, Woody Allen is Fielding Mellish, a hapless New Yorker who follows her to a tiny Latin American nation and gets swept into its latest rebellion. Louise Lasser's Nancy is committed to the cause and unimpressed by Fielding's romantic pursuit, while Carlos Montalbán figures into the country's unstable politics. The film turns political upheaval into farce, mixing coups and revolutionary chaos with nervous chatter, sight gags, and abrupt comic detours.
