Traveling con man Harold Hill arrives in 1910s River City, Iowa, posing as a boys’ bandleader so he can sell instruments and uniforms, pocket the money, and move on before anyone catches up. Robert Preston is Hill, all fast talk and confidence, while Shirley Jones’s Marian Paroo, the town librarian, meets his plans with immediate skepticism. As Hill works on the town’s parents, civic leaders, and children, the story moves through small-town comedy, courtship, and a growing band craze built around Meredith Willson’s songs, including “Seventy-Six Trombones” and “Till There Was You.”
