An unemployed clown takes a maintenance job in a crumbling apartment block where meat is scarce, grain works as currency, and the butcher downstairs keeps his tenants fed by suspicious means. Dominique Pinon is the newcomer, whose romance with the butcher’s daughter pulls him deeper into the building’s grotesque economy. Jean-Claude Dreyfus’s landlord presides over the place with a heavy hand, while Marie-Laure Dougnac is the daughter caught between her family and the new arrival. In Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s post-apocalyptic world, disappearing tenants, rattling contraptions, and an underground band of vegetarians all crowd in around the central love story.
