In 1940, a new commanding officer arrives at an experimental mixed-sex air defence base just as England comes under heavy bombardment, and finds the troops far more interested in each other than in the enemy. Windsor Davies's Captain S. Melly is determined to impose discipline and keep the men and women apart, while Judy Geeson and Kenneth Connor are among the personnel throwing the camp further off course. The more Melly pushes his separatist rules, the more the base turns against him, with sabotage, flirtation, and chaos breaking out beneath the threat of German air raids.
