After a noble lord cheats the soldiers he hired, mercenary leader Martin turns revenge into kidnapping, taking the lord’s son’s fiancée as the two sides move toward open war. Rutger Hauer is Martin, leading a band of hardened fighters who seize a castle while plague spreads through the countryside. Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Agnes is trapped at the center of the feud, with Steven (Tom Burlinson) trying to reclaim her from the men who took her. Paul Verhoeven places the conflict in 1501 Europe, where warfare, disease, and shifting loyalties press in from every side.
