Abandoned at a convent by his aristocratic father, Anthony Adverse grows to adulthood under the care of merchant John Bonnyfeather, carrying the burden of a hidden birth into the upheaval of the Napoleonic era. Fredric March is Anthony, whose romance with Olivia de Havilland's Angela Giuseppe is broken by circumstance and distance. As he is swept into a long journey far from home, the life he tries to build keeps colliding with the choices of Claude Rains' Don Luis, the father who cast him off in the first place.
