In Nazi-occupied France, a boy at a provincial Catholic boarding school befriends a new classmate whose hidden Jewish identity places both boys inside the dangers of the war. Gaspard Manesse is the curious student who watches school routines, small rivalries, and black-market dealings with growing attention, while Raphaël Fejtö’s reserved newcomer carries a secret the adults are trying to protect. Drawing on Louis Malle’s own childhood, the film keeps close to daily life at the school as the occupation moves from the edges of the boys’ world to its center.
