Calvin is a young novelist who found early success and now can't get past his writer's block or his stalled love life. Paul Dano's Calvin finally makes progress by writing about Ruby, a woman who seems to understand him completely; a week later, Ruby (Zoe Kazan) is sitting in his apartment, alive and impossible to explain. As Calvin tries to adjust to the fact that his fictional creation has stepped into the everyday world, the film keeps its focus on the uneasy line between romantic fantasy and another person's independence.
