Jeremy Irons is Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged British professor lodging at the home of widow Charlotte Haze (Melanie Griffith) and becoming obsessed with her teenage daughter, Lolita. To stay close to the girl, he marries Charlotte, pulling the household into a tense arrangement shaped by secrecy, jealousy, and manipulation. Dominique Swain is Lolita, whose flirtation and defiance keep shifting the balance of power, while Frank Langella’s Clare Quilty hovers at the edges as an intrusive, hard-to-place presence in Humbert’s unraveling world.
