The Mission

ActionAdventureDrama125 min

In 18th-century South America, Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons), a Spanish Jesuit, travels into the jungle to build a mission among the region’s Indigenous people. Robert De Niro’s Mendoza begins as a slave hunter, then is drawn into Gabriel’s work after a conversion that binds the two men to the same community. As Spain hands the colony to Portugal, the mission is caught between church authority, colonial power, and the threat of violent displacement. Waterfalls, dense forest, and the uneasy alliance between a man of faith and a man shaped by brutality define the film’s world.
