On the French Riviera in the 1940s, Russian writer Ivan Bunin is entangled in a fraught household where love, marriage, and artistic devotion keep colliding. His wife Vera is at the center of that world as Bunin's bond with the young poet Galina Plotnikova deepens, pulling opera singer Marga Kovtun and literary man Leonid Gurov into the same orbit. With Andrey Smirnov and Galina Tyunina leading the ensemble, the film follows Bunin's little-known private life through diary entries, uneasy domestic rituals, and a circle of people bound together by desire and loneliness.
