In the 1930s, bookie Sorrowful Jones finds his tightly run life upended when a desperate gambler leaves his young daughter behind as collateral for a bet. Walter Matthau is Sorrowful, a stingy racetrack operator whose world of debts, odds, and backroom arrangements suddenly includes a child he never expected to be caring for. Sara Stimson's little girl becomes a constant presence around his business, forcing him to reckon with responsibilities outside his usual code. At the same time, Julie Andrews enters the picture as a woman tied to the same gambling circuit, drawing Sorrowful into something more personal than the next wager.
