An Irish family arrives in New York carrying little money and a grief they do not know how to speak about. Seen through the eyes of the older daughter, their new life in a rough apartment building becomes a series of small battles: finding work, keeping the family together, and trying to make a strange city feel less hostile. The parents strain under loss and uncertainty while the children turn their surroundings into adventure, even as the pressure at home keeps mounting. When a friendship forms with a neighbor in the building, the family’s fragile routine begins to shift. Jim Sheridan’s story stays close to the daily risks, hopes, and hurts of starting over.
