Rembrandt
Drama85 min
The story begins in the mid-1600s, when celebrated Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn is at the height of his fame and suddenly widowed. Charles Laughton is Rembrandt, following the artist as grief pushes his work into darker territory and strains his ties with the patrons who helped make his name. Gertrude Lawrence and Elsa Lanchester appear in the circle around him as public acclaim gives way to conflict with buyers, critics, and the people unsettled by what he puts on canvas. The focus stays on the man behind the paintings, watching reputation and personal loss reshape both his life and his art.
