The Asthenic Syndrome
Drama153 min
Nikolai is a teacher whose pupils meet him with epic indifference, and he’s also struggling with a condition once called hypochondria or black melancholia, now labeled asthenic syndrome. As his exhaustion deepens, ordinary encounters start to fray, and the line between illness, irritability, and emotional numbness gets harder to separate. Sergei Popov and Olga Antonova are central figures in this Russian-language Soviet drama, which follows Nikolai through a public world that feels worn down, impatient, and sharply observant about the people moving through it.
