After his wife's suicide, David Callaway is left to raise his nine-year-old daughter Emily alone, and her new imaginary friend quickly becomes harder to dismiss. Robert De Niro is David, a father trying to sort grief from something more alarming, while Dakota Fanning's Emily withdraws into games with a figure she calls Charlie. What begins as a child's coping mechanism darkens as unsettling incidents pile up around them, pushing David to question what Emily is hiding and whether Charlie exists only in her imagination.
