In 1950s Louisiana, 14-year-old Dani Trant is inseparable from her older sister Maureen until a local boy unsettles that bond. Reese Witherspoon is Dani, full of tomboy stubbornness and first-crush confusion, while Jason London’s Court drifts from a flirtation with her into a secret romance with Maureen. What begins as a summer of family routines and adolescent longing turns into a rupture inside the Trant household, with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper as the girls’ parents. The film keeps its focus close to Dani as she runs up against jealousy, heartbreak, and a harder understanding of love.
