In late-1980s Los Angeles, a veteran LAPD anti-gang officer is paired with a hotheaded rookie as they patrol neighborhoods caught between the Bloods, the Crips, and Hispanic street gangs. Robert Duvall is Bob Hodges, a seasoned C.R.A.S.H. cop who knows the street’s codes; Sean Penn’s Danny McGavin arrives with swagger and a shorter fuse. Dennis Hopper directs the film through South Central, Echo Park, Westlake, and East L.A., where gang identity is marked by the colors people wear and every police stop threatens to push the violence further.
