The Libertine
DramaRomance114 min
In 1675 England, Johnny Depp is John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, a poet at the court of Charles II whose wit, drinking, and sexual excess make him both a celebrity and a problem. When the king, embodied by John Malkovich, asks Rochester to mount a play celebrating his reign, Rochester takes an interest in actress Elizabeth Barry, with Samantha Morton's Barry becoming the focus of his attention and instruction. Moving between the royal court and the theater world, the film follows Rochester's public notoriety and private unraveling against a backdrop of Restoration politics, performance, and scandal.
