In Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II, Hans is a former star student who now serves as an SS officer at Auschwitz-Birkenau. His latest assignment is not to fight at the front but to help make the camp’s killing machinery more efficient by building a new gas chamber. As he carries out orders from his superiors, the work forces him into direct contact with the camp’s brutality and with the scale of what those orders are designed to do. The film follows Hans as duty, ambition, and conscience collide inside a system built on extermination, and as his role in that system becomes impossible for him to ignore.
