On the day of his wedding, Sir John Carteret loses his fiancée Moonyeen to a jealous rival, and the shock sends him into decades of seclusion. When Moonyeen's orphaned niece Kathleen is left in his care, he raises her in the shadow of that old tragedy, trying to preserve a household built on memory. As Kathleen reaches adulthood, a romance with the son of the man who shattered John's life pulls the past back to the surface. Leslie Howard leads the grieving household, with Norma Shearer at the center of the younger romance.
