A massive solar flare knocks Mercury out of orbit, gives the planet an intense magnetic field, and sends it hurtling toward Earth. Instead of an asteroid or alien attack, the danger comes from a neighboring planet pulled into a deadly new path, giving the movie its mix of space-driven catastrophe, scientific crisis, and large-scale destruction.
