As India enters the sudden lockdown of April 2020, thousands of migrant workers trying to return home are stopped at a sealed state border checkpoint, where an endless traffic jam becomes a cross-section of the country. Rajkummar Rao is Surya Kumar Singh, the officer abruptly put in charge of the crossing, caught between official orders and civilians with nowhere to go. Around him, performers including Pankaj Kapur and Bhumi Pednekar bring different corners of that crowd into focus, as shortages of food, water, and transport sharpen the divisions already running through the standstill.
