Sally, the wife of a former District Attorney’s investigator, is supposed to be closing down her husband’s failing detective agency when a wealthy society matron walks in with what seems like a simple adultery case. Joan Blondell is Sally, who takes the job herself in hopes of keeping the agency alive; once the client’s husband turns up dead, she keeps digging even after Melvyn Douglas’s investigator-husband returns to the D.A.’s office and gets assigned to the same murder. With Mary Astor arriving as the woman who brings the case through the door, the setup turns into a fast-moving mix of marital rivalry, society scandal, and murder.
