In Jim Jarmusch’s black-and-white vision of the late 19th-century West, Johnny Depp is William Blake, a quiet accountant who arrives in the frontier town of Machine for work and instead ends up wounded, wanted, and fleeing into the wilderness after a killing. Along the way he falls in with Gary Farmer’s Nobody, an outcast Native American who sees Blake in spiritual terms and guides him west as bounty hunters close in. Crispin Glover and Lance Henriksen appear among the men on Blake’s trail, while Neil Young’s jagged guitar score hangs over the film’s empty towns, forests, and gun smoke.
