Napoleon

DocumentaryDramaWar333 min

Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise is traced from his schooldays to the French Revolution, the Reign of Terror, and his 1797 invasion of Italy. In Albert Dieudonné’s hands, the future emperor emerges first as a military-school outsider, with even a snowball fight staged like a campaign, before the film follows his break from Corsica and his movement through the upheaval in France. Antonin Artaud appears amid the revolutionary turmoil in a production that cuts between private ambition, street violence, and battlefield spectacle. Made in 1927, the film turns early French history into a sweeping silent portrait of war, politics, and self-invention.
