As a blizzard bears down on a Chicago-area airport, general manager Mel Bakersfeld (Burt Lancaster) is forced to keep the runways open while a troubled passenger prepares to bring down a Boeing 707. Dean Martin is pilot Vernon Demerest, in the air as the threat takes shape, and Van Heflin's D.O. Guerrero is the desperate man carrying the bomb. Around them, airline staff, crew members, and stranded travelers turn the terminal and the cabin into one connected crisis, with snowbound logistics on the ground colliding with rising panic in the sky.
