Fifteen-year-old Mia is at war with nearly everyone around her, filling her days with dancing, petty fights, and restless wandering on an Essex housing estate. Katie Jarvis is Mia, a volatile teenager living with her hard-partying mother and younger sister, with little room to breathe at home or anywhere else. When her mother brings home Connor (Michael Fassbender), his easy charm and attention catch Mia off guard, and she starts to imagine he might offer a way out of the chaos around her. Andrea Arnold keeps the story tightly fixed on Mia as family tension, sexual awakening, and rebellion begin to collide.
