After years devoted to her father, Catherine is left grieving a brilliant mathematician whose grip on reality has slipped so far that she begins to fear what she may have inherited from him. Gwyneth Paltrow is Catherine, guarded and exhausted after caring for Robert (Anthony Hopkins), whose reputation in mathematics looms over the house even as his illness deepens. When Hal, a young mathematician who admired Robert, enters her closed-off world, and sister Claire (Hope Davis) arrives with plans of her own, questions of genius, memory, and instability start pressing in on every side.
