After her husband runs off with his secretary, Terry Wolfmeyer is left in suburban Michigan with four daughters, a house full of resentment, and too much to drink. Joan Allen is Terry, a mother whose anger and grief pull her toward the man next door: Kevin Costner’s Denny, a former baseball player who becomes her late-night confidant and drinking partner. As Denny starts slipping into the family’s daily life, the daughters — with Evan Rachel Wood among them — begin relying on him too, and a neighborhood friendship starts crossing into more complicated territory.
