Novelist Iris Murdoch and her husband, John Bayley, are seen across two periods of their life together: the heady early years of their relationship and the later stretch when Alzheimer's begins to overtake her. Judi Dench is Murdoch in old age, with Jim Broadbent as the academic husband trying to care for her as memory slips away. In the younger years, Kate Winslet gives Murdoch her wit, intensity, and independence, opposite Hugh Bonneville's shy, bookish Bayley. Moving between student days and domestic life in Oxford, the film follows a marriage shaped by intellect, devotion, and the strain of illness.
