First Cow

DramaWestern122 min

In 1820s Oregon Territory, a taciturn cook traveling west with fur trappers befriends a Chinese immigrant, and the two pin their hopes on a risky business built around the only cow in the territory. John Magaro is the skilled outsider whose talent in the kitchen becomes an opening, while Orion Lee brings a watchful intelligence to the fortune-seeker who sees possibility where others see scarcity. Their plan depends on milk quietly taken from a wealthy landowner’s prized Jersey cow, with Toby Jones as the Englishman who owns it. The frontier here is muddy, crowded, and precarious, shaped as much by hunger and trade as by open land.
