In 1980s Manhattan, art gallery assistant Elizabeth McGraw is pulled into a brief, increasingly consuming affair with a Wall Street broker she barely knows. Kim Basinger’s Elizabeth meets Mickey Rourke’s John through chance encounters that quickly turn into a relationship built on secrecy, control, and a series of sexual games, with intimacy giving way to uncertainty as the boundaries of the affair keep shifting. Adrian Lyne directs the film as a polished New York romance where galleries, restaurants, lofts, and trading-floor money frame a connection driven less by confession than by ritual.
