After a young Amish boy witnesses a murder in a Philadelphia train station, Harrison Ford is detective John Book, the officer assigned to protect him and his mother. When the case puts Book himself in danger, he escorts them back to rural Pennsylvania and takes refuge inside their tightly ordered community. Kelly McGillis's Rachel must weigh her mistrust of an outsider against the threat closing in, while Lukas Haas's Samuel becomes the quiet center of the investigation. Peter Weir places police procedure, corruption, and a tentative romance against the plain rhythms of Amish life.
