After losing his job and girlfriend in the same day, Bill Murray’s John Winger talks his friend Russell Ziskey into joining the Army and turns basic training into a running battle with authority. Harold Ramis is Russell, the more cautious half of the pair, while Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates) is stuck trying to whip their platoon of oddballs into shape. As Winger’s jokes, shortcuts, and bad ideas keep escalating, the film pushes its barracks comedy into a broad military parody with mud, marches, insubordination, and a secret vehicle that sends things far beyond routine training.
